OK, just one more question, how low can the field current go before the field weakening before the contactor should open the circuit? If I've got a 7.75A field current on the nameplate, where should i set the adjustment on the contactor?

The field weakening adjustment on this contactor is by done with a set screw. The clouds are lifting now!

What does a field weakening contactor do? I have an old DC motor starter that operates using big coil operated contactors. I was wondering what is the function of the field weakening contactor because it's not making sense to me. It looks adjustable and I'm not sure where I'm going with this.
